Local Area

Grinshill is a small picturesque village, only 8 miles from Shrewsbury, and is noted for its attractive sandstone buildings and it lies directly under the hill which rises to 630 feet above sea level. From the summit there are breathtaking views over the Shropshire plain to the Wrekin, the Clee Hills, the Stretton Hills, Stiperstones and even over to the Berwyns in North Wales.

This popular North Shropshire beauty spot comprising Corbet Wood and Grinshill Hill has been designated a local nature reserve. The area features attractive broadleaved woodland and mature Scots Pine planted amongst the old sandstone quarries dating back 1000 years. The local stone has been used to construct many of Shropshire’s churches, bridges and municipal buildings besides more famous structures including St George’s Hall in Liverpool and for repairs to No 10 Downing Street. A section of the area has been classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its remarkable geology. The Shropshire Way runs directly behind Amblewood Cottage and Woodpeckers. There are numerous public footpaths and bridleways through the neighbouring woods providing excellent opportunities for nature lovers and walkers to explore the area.

These footpaths also lead to the attractive village of Clive, birthplace of the Restoration Dramatist William Wycherley and noted for the dominating tower and spire of its parish church. Clive contains a village shop / post office which caters for most daily requirements. There is a railway station at Yorton approximately 1 and a half miles from the cottages, convenient for Shrewsbury.

The medieval town of Shrewsbury, combines historical buildings including the Castle and Norman Abbey with many modern amenities for eating, entertainment and shopping. The annual Shrewsbury Flower Show is held in the 29 acres of parkland known as the Quarry.
